The core question is not “Which GitLab clone has the longest feature checklist?” It is “Which parts of GitLab are you actually trying to escape?” If the problem is the SaaS bill, metered usage, and stakeholder access, self-hosted GitLab Community Edition is the obvious first thing to evaluate because GitLab is open-core and the Community Edition covers most of the platform for hosting cost. If the problem is that GitLab has become too much platform for your team, then a narrower tool such as Plane may be a better fit, provided you are willing to give up GitLab’s source control and CI center of gravity.

GitLab’s Free tier makes the paid jump feel unusually abrupt. Premium is the entry paid tier at $29 per user/month billed annually, and no month-to-month rate is published, so the true monthly figure may be higher. That is the figure people notice first, but it is not the whole bill.

Compute minutes cost $10 per 1,000, storage costs $5/month per 10GiB, and GitLab Duo credits cost $1 per credit, with $12 per user/month included on Premium. These are not theoretical accounting details if your team runs CI regularly, stores build artifacts, or adopts the AI features GitLab is actively putting in front of users. The seat price is just the part printed in the large font.

Premium also makes stakeholder access less casual than many teams expect. Guest users are limited on Premium, so inviting product managers, clients, or other non-engineering contributors can push more people toward paid seats. The economics get especially awkward when the team is trying to centralize planning and delivery but only a subset of users writes code.

The slightly annoying punchline is that the usual escape route is already in the GitLab family. GitLab is open-core, and self-managed Community Edition covers most of the relevant platform for hosting cost. Plane can be self-hosted or used through its official cloud, and its official SaaS price is listed at $8 per month. The repository is TypeScript, which is a relevant detail if your organization wants to inspect or extend the application rather than treat it as an opaque service. The star count is enormous, but the repository also has 1,083 open issues; that combination says “widely watched and actively used,” not “every edge case has been polished.” Open source is not a synonym for frictionless.

Pick Plane if you want a focused project-management system with self-hosting available, and GitLab’s planning layer is the part you are trying to replace. It is also a reasonable candidate when your team wants tasks, sprints, docs, and triage in a separate tool without paying GitLab Premium seats to every stakeholder. Skip Plane if the requirement is a single platform for repositories, merge requests, CI, security workflows, and planning. It may reduce the complexity of one layer while creating an integration boundary where GitLab previously kept everything together.
